Why Magnesium Matters for Men Over 50
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body โ including energy metabolism, protein synthesis, muscle function, and crucially, testosterone regulation. Yet deficiency is extremely common, particularly in older men, due to reduced dietary intake, impaired intestinal absorption with age, and increased urinary excretion from certain medications (diuretics, proton pump inhibitors).
The connection to male sexual health runs through two pathways: direct hormonal support and sleep quality.
The Testosterone Connection
A randomized controlled trial published in Biological Trace Element Research is the most cited study on magnesium and testosterone. Researchers found that magnesium supplementation raised both free and total testosterone levels in sedentary men and physically active men, with the effect size being clinically meaningful. The mechanism is partially understood: magnesium reduces sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) binding, which increases bioavailable (free) testosterone. It also acts as a co-factor in the enzymatic conversion processes within the testes' Leydig cells where testosterone is produced.
The Sleep Connection
Testosterone production follows a diurnal rhythm โ the majority of daily production occurs during deep sleep (slow-wave sleep). Men who sleep fewer than 5 hours per night have been shown to have significantly lower testosterone levels than those sleeping 8 hours. [Trusted Source]
Magnesium plays a direct role in sleep quality. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for relaxation), regulates melatonin production, and binds to GABA receptors โ the same mechanism targeted by some sleep medications, but without the dependency risk. Men with low magnesium tend to have lighter, more disrupted sleep cycles, which in turn suppresses testosterone production.
Food Sources vs. Supplementation
Magnesium is found naturally in leafy greens (spinach, Swiss chard), pumpkin seeds, almonds, dark chocolate (70%+ cacao), black beans, and whole grains. However, achieving therapeutic levels through food alone can be difficult, particularly for men with absorption issues.
Among supplement forms, magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate are the best tolerated and most bioavailable. Magnesium oxide โ the most common and cheapest form โ has very poor absorption and is primarily useful as a laxative.
